Swedish vs. Deep Tissue vs. Thai Massage: Which One Is Right for You?

Not sure which massage to book? Here's the quick guide.
The short answer: Swedish massage uses light-to-medium pressure and flowing strokes to relax the whole body. Deep tissue uses slow, firm pressure to release chronic muscle tension. Thai massage combines assisted stretching and rhythmic compression — clothes on or no clothed, oils or no oils — to improve flexibility and mobility.
Swedish Massage
The classic relaxation massage: long, gliding strokes with oil and gentle kneading across the whole body. Soothing rather than intense.
Best for: stress relief, better sleep, first-time guests, and unwinding after long days on your feet.
Deep Tissue Massage
Slow, firm pressure that reaches the deeper muscle layers to break up knots and chronic tightness. Expect a "good hurt" and possibly mild soreness the next day — never unbearable pain.
Best for: chronic neck, shoulder, or lower back tension, desk workers, and athletes.
Thai Massage
Often called "assisted yoga." Performed fully clothed or without cloth on a mat or table, your therapist stretches, rocks, and compresses your body along its energy lines. You leave feeling energized and loose.
Best for: stiffness, limited range of motion, and anyone who sits most of the day.
Quick Comparison
Swedish | Deep Tissue | Thai | |
Pressure | Light–medium | Firm–deep | Compression + stretching |
Clothing | Draped, with oil | Draped, with oil | Fully clothed, no oil |
Goal | Relaxation | Release tension | Flexibility |
How to Choose
"I want to feel calm and rested." → Swedish
"I want this knot gone and feel reset" → Deep tissue
"I want to feel looser and more mobile." → Thai
